We adopted Coco five weeks ago, a 1.5 year-old Hound/Husky mix. She’s in the full swing of training now, and we’re firm believers in positive training and using treats as positive reinforcement. In addition to weekly obedience school, she had a session with a local trainer/behaviorist. Dr. Ericka brought these treats to the house for Coco’s training session, and she loved them.
Dr. Ericka Treats
1 lb. ground turkey
1 cup oatmeal (old fashioned)
1 cup parmesean cheese (grated)
1 egg, lightly beaten
3 dashes garlic powder
Mix all the ingredients in a big bowl and then press firmly into a 13×9 (or larger) pyrex dish or other baking dish. The key here is to get the mixture as flat as possible so you have less cutting to do later on.
Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes. Let cool. Use a spatula to remove it from the pan and cut with a pizza cutter into bite-size squares.
The longer the treats cook, the crispier crust it will have. If you like them really soft with no crust cook them for less time. The crust tends to makes them easier to handle while training.
Place the treats into a large freezer bag and freeze them until ready for use. Pour a few into a treat bag and in a few minutes they are thawed out enough for use. Some dogs like them even if they are partially frozen.
