Hoo boy, have I been waiting for this moment for a long time! It’s the first of many recipes to bake out of the newly published Baked Elements.
This is the third book by Matt and Renato of Baked, and it’s gorgeous. Ten of the author’s favorite ingredients, arranged by chapter… with the same focus on classic American desserts. This is one of those cookbooks I’m reading cover to cover. Yeah, I do that. I read cookbooks.
Anyway, the Brooksters are similar in concept to a favorite recipe I make by Abby Dodge – Chocolate Chip Brownie Double Deckers.
There’s something lovely about the marriage of brownies and chocolate chip cookies. The two recipes differ in execution and the final result is slightly different, but both are delicious. I think I prefer the bars just slightly more, because they cook more evenly.

Wow, pretty Brooksters! I baked with the group this week for the first time and made the bigger pie size which are fantastic but I really like this smaller size- the cookie looks so perfectly baked on top of the brownie-great job;-)
Interesting, Sheri – I’d never tried anything like this before. I like the idea of making bar cookies like this. I haven’t made Nestle Tollhouse Cookies for so long but I thought this cookie dough tasted exactly like it. I liked these & think they’s be fun to take to a party since they’re so unusual.
I’m excited about the giveaway – it will be fun to see who wins!
I read cookbooks too!! Your Brooksters look great!
Oh your Brookters look scrumptious! I was concerned about how evenly these would bake so I think baking them in bars sounds like a fantastic idea! : )
Oooh, I bet bars would be a better application for this combo so they could bake more evenly!
My Brooksters fell a bit in the middle, too. I was worried about it at first and put them back in the oven for a few minutes. I think maybe it’s just part of the appeal?
I’m having a lot of fun reading this cookbook, too!
Lack of even baking is definitely an issue with the Brooksters — I think that having an equal height layer of brownies and cookies in a pan probably is a better idea. But it wouldn’t be as fun, would it? Or as cute as yours!
