This is a lightly spiced sour cream cake. It’s easy to make (maybe on a Sunday night?). The frosting is good, a pretty straightforward chocolate frosting.
It’s not exactly a pretty cake. Yellow and square, with chocolate frosting on top. It’s functional, because sometimes you just need cake.
I think I baked mine a little too long, because while it wasn’t exactly dry, it didn’t have a super moist texture. The flavor was fine, just didn’t bowl us over. The frosting is chocolatey and pudding-like, and it’s good, but it didn’t wow us either.
Larry and I both felt the same way about this recipe. It’s an okay cake, but nothing particularly wonderful about it. I had a bite of the first slice, then never went back for more. I think Larry had a few pieces, but it mostly just sat on the counter, uneaten.

I actually thought each component on its own was ok, but I was surprised by how much I liked them together. Yours looks really great.
I like that it is an easy cake to pull together. I can’t comment on the taste, as I still can’t taste anything but I think it would be a good cake base to play with different flavours, as Yael suggested in her post.
I think we’ve been so spoiled by all the fancy cakes we’ve made with Baked! :o)
Mine seemed to take forever to bake and maybe that dried mine out? I made a 2X the recipe large cake…I expected that one to take longer to bake, but I also made individual sizes and they took a long time too. Not thrilled by this cake, but we do love the frosting which is different from other chocolate frostings I make…so that is a good find.
I agree, this cake was just ok. But I was glad it was an easy recipe!
That’s got to be unusual in your house! I’m really looking forward to the Focaccia!
The ease and simplicity of this cake are what made this cake a winner for me. Although I really enjoyed the pudding frosting….I thought it was unique and delicious!
