It was National Dog Day on Friday, so we bakers at Baked Sunday Mornings took on these chocolate chip hushpuppies to honor our loyal pals. Although given the chocolate in the recipe, dogs will just have to look on as we enjoy them.
I already knew I liked these – I had them several years ago during the shoot for Baked Occasions, p. 168). I was surprised, because fried cornmeal dough, while delicious, isn’t something I’d want for dessert – even with chocolate and maple syrup.
I’m not sure what I did wrong, but my fritters disintegrated in the oil while frying. I was able to (barely) salvage just a few, but the rest just made a big mess of my pan and oil. I offered some to Coco, but she wasn’t interested at all. Not really. I mean, I fake offered them to her, but she just turned her head like it was poison. She probably knew that they weren’t the real thing.
Edit: I now know what went wrong – my partner in crime on Baked Sunday Mornings figured out that there’s an error in the recipe – the weight doesn’t match the volume. And I always cook by weight whenever possible. Baking in a group wins again!

I know, they sound so promising! Same thing happened to mine and they were pretty charred. I’m guessing the oil was way too hot. Oh well, you win some, you lose some! Great pic with Coco. :)
I didn’t even think to check the weight of the flour – I did think my batter was too loose, but was rushing around doing a million things at once. I might make a half-batch at some point, because Larry LOVES hush puppies.
I must admit that our pug, Julie, liked them. I wonder what it says of her taste in food..
